silver 925, stainless steel pin / 40x40x15mm
Brooch consisting of 3 visual layers and one functional layer, with two-pin latch.
As in the objects described before, this brooch is also characterized by the dominance and clarity of the geometric form chosen. The brooch consists of smooth, two-dimensional square surfaces placed one on top of the other in order to create a three-dimensional body. Both the cut-through letters and the words chosen also underline this concept of three-dimensionality. In English, the German „Schicht“ and Sicht“ stand for „layer“ and „view“, respectively. To further emphasize the effect of three-dimensionality, the font size used decreases from layer to layer thus creating an additional illusion of depth.
As I was determined on creating the piece from annealed sheet metal, I was limited to techniques that did not require any heat. The use of un-annealed sheet metal would have made it necessary to work with much thicker layers. Thus, to avoid heating I chose hollow rivets as a means to join the layers. For the latch, all details were produced as fold-outs from a two-dimensional sheet, a technique also requiring no heat.
